What X-Bond microcement is

01

X-Bond is natural stone aggregate bound in a latex polymer. Mixed on site, troweled in thin coats and sealed, it becomes one continuous waterproof surface.

Because it bonds to what is already there, a bathroom that would need a week of demolition becomes a weekend of troweling. The finished surface is 1/8″ (3 mm) thick, so floor heights and door clearances barely change.

Color sits in the material rather than on top of it, so a chip or a scratch shows the same tone underneath. It works on floors, walls, ceilings, countertops, showers and pools, indoors or out.

One kit covers up to 200 sq ft. Measure length × width for floors, perimeter × height for walls, then add 10% for waste and the test panel you should always do first.

Natural or Smooth

03

Both are the same material. The difference is made at the finish coat, and it is the only thing that changes what ships.

Natural

Trowel movement visible

Cloudy and tonal, closest to poured concrete. Trowel marks stay part of the finish. No Micro Bond needed, which is why the Natural kit is $150 less.

Smooth

Tighter, more uniform

Micro Bond goes into the finish coat for a closer, more even surface with less visible movement. One gallon is added to the 200 sq ft kit.

Sealer systems

04

The sealer decides how the surface looks and how hard it wears. All three are water-based and low-VOC: two to three coats, light foot traffic at 24 hours, full cure at 7 days.

SEMCO Sealer Matte

Matte · MS601

Flattest and most concrete-like. Hides marks well. The default for floors and walls.

Titan Shield Gloss

High gloss · TSG701

Polyurethane hybrid and the hardest wearing of the three. Takes vehicle traffic. Garages, commercial floors and wet areas.

Natural Shield

Invisible · NAS501

Penetrating sealer with no surface film and maximum breathability. For exteriors and submerged applications.

The color range

05

Eight colors, each mixed into the finish coat. The palette is deliberately quiet: these are stone tones, not paint colors. Color is in the material, so a chip or a scratch shows the same tone underneath.

Polar Bear

Soft warm white

Modern Grey

Baked Clay

Screens distort color, and these tones are close enough to each other that it matters. Each sample is troweled and sealed exactly as the finished surface would be, so you can see it in your own light.

What is in the kit

06

Every item, why it is there, and how far it goes. You supply the tools.

X-Bond Stone

3 × 50 lbs

The natural stone base. About 70 sq ft per 50 lb bag.

X-Bond Liquid

6 × 1 Gallon

The latex polymer the stone mixes with. About 35 sq ft per gallon on Natural, 32 on Smooth.

Color Activator

6 × 1 Gallon

Your chosen color, matched one-for-one to the X-Bond Liquid.

Micro Bond

1 × 1 Gallon · Smooth only

Added to the finish coat on a Smooth kit. About 200 sq ft per gallon.

SEMCO Liquid Membrane

1 × 1 Gallon

Waterproofing for wet areas, timber and cracks over 1/4″. About 235 sq ft per gallon.

Stone Soap

1 × 1 Quart

Surface prep before you start, and aftercare once the surface has cured.

How it is applied

07

Five stages over a weekend for a typical bathroom. Installation videos and the full guide come with every order. You supply the trowel and hawk, a 1/2″ drill with paddle mixer, buckets, an 80–120 grit pole sander, a 3/8″ nap roller, tape and knee pads.

01

Prep

Clean and degrease the surface and fix any loose tile. Power Cleaner for oil or grease, Stone Soap otherwise. Once dry, apply the Scratch Coat, which creates the initial bond.

02

Membrane

Two coats of SEMCO Liquid Membrane, with fabric reinforcement in the corners and at changes of plane. Required over timber, in wet areas, and where cracks exceed 1/4″.

03

Base coats

Two troweled coats of X-Bond Stone mixed with X-Bond Liquid. Work in sections, keep a wet edge, and sand lightly between coats with 80–120 grit.

04

Finish coat

The color coat, troweled to the texture you chose. On a Smooth kit, Micro Bond goes into this coat. On Natural, trowel movement is left visible.

05

Seal

Two to three coats of your sealer, rolled with a 3/8″ nap roller. Light foot traffic at 24 hours, full cure at 7 days.

Questions

08
What surfaces can X-Bond microcement go over?

Ceramic and porcelain tile, concrete and screed, plywood and cement board, drywall, existing microcement, timber and painted masonry. The surface must be clean, dry and sound, with loose tile re-fixed first. Over timber and in wet areas the SEMCO Liquid Membrane step is required rather than optional.

What is the difference between the Smooth and Natural kits?

Both use the same stone and liquid. Natural leaves trowel movement visible for a cloudy, tonal finish closest to poured concrete. Smooth adds one gallon of Micro Bond to the finish coat for a tighter, more uniform surface. That gallon is the only difference in contents, and it is why the Smooth 200 sq ft kit is $1,340 against $1,190 for Natural.

How much does a 200 sq ft kit cost?

$1,190 for the Natural kit and $1,340 for the Smooth kit, in any of the eight colors and with any of the three sealers. That is roughly $6 to $7 per square foot for a DIY installation, materials included.

How do I work out how much I need?

Measure length × width for floors. For walls, multiply the perimeter by the height. Add the two together, then add 10% for waste and for the test panel you should always do first. A 5′ × 8′ bathroom floor (40 sq ft) with 26′ of wall to 4′ high (104 sq ft) comes to 144 sq ft, so order for 159 sq ft — one 200 sq ft kit.

Which sealer should I choose?

SEMCO Sealer Matte for most floors and walls, where a flat concrete-like finish hides marks best. Titan Shield Gloss where wear matters most, including garages, commercial floors and wet areas, since it takes vehicle traffic. Natural Shield for exteriors and submerged work, because it penetrates rather than forming a film and stays breathable.

Do I need the waterproofing membrane?

Yes for showers, tub surrounds and bathroom floors, over any timber surface, and anywhere cracks exceed 1/4″. Every 200 sq ft kit includes one gallon of SEMCO Liquid Membrane, which covers about 235 sq ft, so it is there whether or not your project needs it.

How long before I can use the surface?

Light foot traffic at 24 hours after the final sealer coat. Full cure at 7 days, and the surface should not be wetted before then. A typical bathroom is a weekend of work followed by that cure.

Can I install it myself?

Yes. The kits are built for DIY renovation and installation videos plus the full written guide come with every order. Start with a test panel in an out-of-the-way spot to get a feel for troweling before you commit to the visible area.
